5th grade Information

Hi! I’m Julie Hill, and this is my sixth teaching 5th grade at East Side Elementary. I was born and raised in Bedford County. I attended Motlow State Community College, Tennessee Technological University, and Middle Tennessee State University. I have a master's degree in education. My husband, Drew, and I recently purchased a farm near where I grew up, and we are in the process of building a home this year and are very excited! I have two fur babies that I love spending time with--Gus (my dog) and Cindy (my cat). I am also expecting my first child this year in June. 

I will be teaching your child all four subjects--English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. They will stay in the same room and not be switching classes this year. In 5th grade, we use the curriculum Wit and Wisdom for ELA where your child will read various novels and strengthen their writing skills. This year in Math, we are using a new Math program called Envision SAVAAS Math. We will use hands-on experiences to gain understanding of Science and the world around us. We use weekly newspapers to teach Social Studies standards and events in history. 

HOMEWORK: There will be one page of homework this year with ELA questions on the front and Math problems on the back. This will be given on Mondays and due back to me on Fridays. Read with your child and listen to them read. Cooper Steel is sponsoring a reading program where if your child logs 1,000 reading minutes they earn a new pair of tennis shoes. If they read an additional 1,000 minutes they will earn a mystery field trip.  If you have internet access at home, have your child work online on these programs: Lexia, Envision Math, Prodigy, Readworks, Boddle, Studies Weekly, Zearn. All can be accessed through Classlink login which they have memorized.
