All About Our Class
We use CKLA for our reading curriculum. It is split into two sections: Knowledge and Skills.
During Knowledge, we hear a story, think about it, talk about it, and write about it! Topics we will learn about are fairy tales, Greek Myths, the War of 1812, cycles in nature, the Civil War, the human body, Immigration to America, Westward Expansion, and American Heroes.
During Skills we learn how to read! We study phonemic awareness (hearing sounds in words), phonics (knowing the letter-sound connection), vocabulary, comprehension (understanding what we read), and fluency (reading smoothly with expression). We also learn grammar, spelling, and writing during this block. Needless to say, we are really busy during Skills!
We use Ready Math curriculum for math. In second grade we focus on addition and subtraction within 1,000, being able to do mental math with different strategies, measuring length, making and interpreting graphs, and learning 2D and 3D shapes.
We start every math lesson with a Number Talk where kids solve equations mentally and explain how they got their answer. We all teach each other during these talks.
Next we do Calendar, where we review skills every day to make sure we don't forget any of our math skills.
Last, we do a lesson using our math books, and practice solving problems accurately. We also use the computer program iReady to get extra practice and play math games.
While we do all this learning, we are following our 4 Bee Rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Ready to Learn, and Be Safe. Our students are hard working and kind, and second grade is a great place to be!
